Abstract

Electronic waste (e-waste), or waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), has become a significant environmental concern because of increasing dependence on electronic products and the rapid replacement of household electrical and electronic devices. This study examined cognizance and removal practices related to e-waste among household users in Lucknow city, Uttar Pradesh, India. Data were collected from 70 respondents through a structured questionnaire that assessed awareness of e-waste, possession of unused electronic items at home, knowledge of hazardous components, understanding of health and environmental risks, and awareness of recycling. The respondent group included 37 males and 33 females. Most respondents were in the 41–45-year age group, followed by the 36–40-year age group. The analysis considered awareness across age groups and educational qualifications using ANOVA. The findings indicate that respondents across different age groups and educational levels were generally aware of e-waste, harmful components, possible health impacts, environmental threats and the need for recycling. However, the results also suggest that awareness should be supported by practical disposal guidance, accessible collection systems and stronger links with authorised recycling channels. The study highlights the importance of household-level participation in safe e-waste segregation, collection and disposal. Strengthened public education and local management systems may improve responsible e-waste practices in urban households.
